SCBNA’s FIRST-EVER Fall/Winter Photo Contest (Sept 15 – Dec 30, 2026)!

Call for Entries: “Capturing Change”

The Society for Conservation Biology North America invites photographers of all backgrounds to participate in our Fall/Winter photo contest, Capturing Change. This contest explores the shifting relationships between people and the environment, highlighting both the beauty and the challenges that come with change.

From seasonal transitions to long-term environmental transformations, we encourage submissions that reflect how landscapes, ecosystems, and human interactions evolve over time, whether those changes are complex, uncertain or hopeful.

Be sure not to pass on an opportunity to share visual stories that document environmental change, inspire dialogue, and build connections between people, places and species.

Who Can Participate:

Open to students, professionals, and community members interested in conservation, photography, and environmental storytelling.

Submission Categories:

  • Stories of Evolution

This category focuses on how species, ecosystems, communities, and relationships between people and nature change over time. Submissions may highlight seasonal cycles, animal behaviour, ecological succession, adaptation, recovery, decline, or changing cultural relationships with the environment. Consider how your image reveals a story of transformation, resilience, loss, or adaptation.

Ask yourself: What has changed, what is changing, or what might change next?

  • Shifting Land/Seascapes

This category explores visible changes in the many physical environments of living organisms (including humans). Submissions can highlight how landscapes, habitats, and ecosystems are being reshaped by natural processes, climate change, development, resource use, pollution, restoration, or other forces. The focus can be on beauty, disruption, or hope, provided the photograph communicates a clear relationship between place and change.

Ask yourself: What do the lands and waters reveal about the environment around us?

  • Making an Impact in Conservation

This category celebrates people, partnerships, and actions that help protect, conserve, or improve the environment. Submissions should show conservation in practice, including the work involved in addressing environmental challenges and supporting positive change.

Ask yourself: Who is making a difference, what actions are being undertaken, and how are they supporting positive change?

Awards & Selection:

One winner per category will be selected by the Student Affairs Committee at the SCBNA. These selected winners will then be voted on by the Public via the SCBNA website and social media for the People’s Choice Award.

The People’s Choice Award will decide the overall prize winner(s).
